The Mad March Hare Sportive

07/03/2010, North Worcestershire

A warm-up event for the 2010 summer calendar. We have kept the distance to a manageable 107km over a generally flat and fast route that touches the Cotswolds. It would not be a Sportive without a bit of a test of your mettle, so were taking you up Saintbury Hill in the first half. Not a leg-breaker but certainly hard enough to have you all clambering for the big sprockets! Throw in a feed station and hot food and drink at the finish, its the perfect recipe for a standout Sportive of 2010...and all this for the MAD entry fee of £8.00 !!!

Epic Cycles Spring Challenge

20/03/2010, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire

The fourth Epic Cycles Spring Challenge is being run by the organisers of the popular Autumn Epic and Devil Ride cyclosportives. The idea behind the Spring Challenge is to provide riders with ideal preparation for the bigger challenges to come as the season gets under way, while raising some cash for the County Air Ambulance at the same time. Over in Italy there are lots of lower key events in the Spring that act as true early season challenges in their own right, while not being the huge undertakings that most Gran Fondos are. The Epic Cycles Spring Challenge is intended to be just like these mini (or Corto) Fondos

White Horse Challenge

Both are challenging but neither are "killers". Event HQ is well catered with plenty of free parking. Timing chips will record your times. For full information, visit www.blackratcycle.co.uk. International Cyclo Sportives

Cyclo Sportives (sometimes spelled Cyclo Sportifs but correctly Cyclosportives, since the full name is randonnée cyclosportive and randonnée is a female noun in French) are long distance, organised, mass-participation cycling events typically held annually. Sportives are the cycling cousin of running’s marathon: as with the 26-mile event, rather than racing other participants, sportives see many cyclists use the event to challenge themselves in a personal battle against the distance and then ultimately, the clock.

A cyclosportive falls between a traditional road race and a non-competitive randonnée or Audax event. Riders normally carry a number and the time they take to complete the course is recorded. There is usually an upper time limit within which the course must be completed (unlike many randonnée events, there is no lower limit preventing riders from completing the course quickly). The already lengthy course will traditionally include climbs and difficult riding conditions, adding to the merit of the event (e.g. the cobblestones of the Paris-Roubaix).

The routes will usually be well sign-posted and/or marshalled (some cyclosportives take place on roads which have been closed to motor traffic for the duration of the event), riders will be able to use feeding stations positioned at intervals along the route to replenish their food and drink supplies and mechanical and medical support may also be provided.
